We decided to go over basic maintenance and hot tub water chemicals so you have a better idea of what to expect and to take the fear out of the situation, after all you bought your hot tub to de-stress your life not to add stress to it.
Basic Maintenance and Water Chemicals
When looking for Coleman Saluspa chemicals, you can buy an all in one hot tub maintenance kit for your hot tub to get started, then top up the products as you need them.
You could start with the Spa Choice Standard Chlorine Kit which includes:
Test Strips – to test your water with, following the test strip it will tell you if your pH levels are correct.
PH Reduce – If the levels are too high you add some to bring your pH back down, the directions of the quantity will be on the bottle depending on your strip result.
PH increase – and if your pH is too low you would use this in the same way, the quantity dependent on the instructions on the bottle.
Chlorine Sanitising Granules – Also included in the kit is the your normal pool additive to kill bacteria.
Re-Energise – which is a non-chlorine shock treatment.
Foam-Free – for the reduction of foam which can build up from soaps used to wash your bathing costumes and from products you might use on your skin.
Defense – for the elimination of scale build up on parts of your hot tub.
Metal Free – to combat the metals in the water we use which can stain your hot tub.
Clear and Sparkle – which is a clarifier for if your water gets cloudy as it removes dirt and oils.
Calcium Increaser – to build up hardness in the water to combat corrosion of metal parts and staining.
Clean & Fast – for cleaning inflatable hot tub at the water line and all inside when it’s empty.
Once you assemble and fill your hot tub, your filter should be installed, you need to heat up the water to the required level for your comfort. When you get to that point the first thing you need to do is add your Metal Free to your water to prevent staining to your hot tub, run the tub for 30 minutes to mix it in and then you’re ready to balance your water.
Check your water with the strips so you can start you’re water treatment. You are going to check the alkalinity of the water first. If you need to adjust the alkalinity you may need to buy some Spa Choice 472-3-5051 Alkalinity Up for Spas and Hot Tubs, 1-Pound, as it’s easier to control the pH levels when the alkalinity is correct. The level should be 80 – 140 parts per million (ppm).
If you have to add Saluspa chemicals to the water to adjust let it circulate for 30 minutes before retesting.
Once your alkaline levels are correct the next step is checking pH levels
Your test strip should tell you whether your pH levels need adjusting or not, you may need to add pH Increase or Reduce it should be able to tell you from the directions on the bottle how much to add.
Next step is to add your Chlorine, turn on the bubble jets and sprinkle the Chlorine granules onto the surface of the water in the hot tub as directed for a newly filled hot tub. Test the FAC – Free Available Chlorine level with your test strips till it measures the correct level before use.
You’re now ready to use your hot tub, enjoy!
You can also use Coleman Saluspa chlorine tablets which can be added to the hot tub using a floating dispenser. This chemical floater makes it easy to treat the water and once the chlorine tablets are dissolved you just lift it out.
Weekly or after each use you can add some Re-Energise shock treatment. A non-chlorine shock product oxidizes the spa water and removes organic contaminants, such as soap film, dead skin, perspiration, oils and lotions.
You need to check your hot tub water about 3 times a week, use your test strips and balance your alkaline, pH levels and FAC as above.
Keep your filtration system working at it’s best by keeping your filter cartridges clean. Many people wash them out with a hose, leave them to air dry and re-use them. They keep a few to rotate around.
Change your filter cartridge regularly and you can buy Spa Choice® Filter Clean & Clear to clean your filters for re-use, so if you buy a 6 pack of filters you can rotate them around if you clean them and air dry them.
